Jedes Mitglied dieser Familie kodiert ein Protein, das die Verknüpfung von DNA-Enden katalysiert, aber jedes hat eine unterschiedliche Rolle im DNA-Metabolismus. Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein ist an der Exzisionsreparatur beteiligt und befindet sich sowohl in den Mitochondrien als auch im Zellkern, wobei die Translationsinitiierung von einem stromaufwärts gelegenen Start-Codon den Transport zu den Mitochondrien ermöglicht und die Translationsinitiierung von einem stromabwärts gelegenen Start-Codon den Transport zum Zellkern ermöglicht.
