Histone sind basische Kernproteine, die für die Nukleosomenstruktur der Chromosomenfaser in Eukaryoten verantwortlich sind. Zwei Moleküle jedes der vier Kernhistone (H2A, H2B, H3 und H4) bilden ein Oktamer, um das ungefähr 146 bp DNA in sich wiederholenden Einheiten, den Nukleosomen, gewickelt sind. Das Linker-Histon H1 interagiert mit der Linker-DNA zwischen den Nukleosomen und fungiert bei der Kompaktierung von Chromatin zu Strukturen höherer Ordnung. Dieses Gen kodiert ein replikationsunabhängiges Histon, das ein Mitglied der Histon-H2A-Familie ist und zwei Transkripte durch die Verwendung des konservierten Stem-Loop-Terminierungsmotivs und des Poly-A-Additionsmotivs erzeugt.
