Dieses Gen kodiert ein Protein, das im ESCRT-Signalweg in der Abspaltungsphase der Zytokinese, bei der intraluminalen endosomalen Vesikelbildung und beim Knospen umhüllter Viren fungiert. Studien mit Mauszellen haben gezeigt, dass die Überexpression dieses Proteins die Apoptose blockieren kann. Darüber hinaus bindet das Produkt dieses Gens an das Produkt des PDCD6-Gens, einem für die Apoptose erforderlichen Protein, auf Kalzium-abhängige Weise. Dieses Genprodukt bindet auch an Endophiline, Proteine, die die Membranform während der Endozytose regulieren. Die Überexpression dieses Genprodukts und der Endophiline führt zu zytoplasmatischer Vakuolisierung, die teilweise für den Schutz vor dem Zelltod verantwortlich sein kann. Für dieses Gen wurden mehrere alternativ gespleißte Transkriptvarianten gefunden, die verschiedene Isoformen kodieren. Verwandte Pseudogene wurden auf Chromosom 15 identifiziert.
