Dieses Gen kodiert ein nukleär kodiertes mitochondriales bifunktionelles Enzym mit Methylentetrahydrofolat-Dehydrogenase- und Methenyltetrahydrofolat-Cyclohydrolase-Aktivitäten. Das Enzym fungiert als Homodimer und ist einzigartig in seiner absoluten Anforderung an Magnesium und anorganisches Phosphat. Die Bildung des Enzym-Magnesium-Komplexes ermöglicht die Bindung von NAD. Alternatives Spleißen führt zu zwei verschiedenen Transkripten, von denen eines Proteine kodiert und das andere nicht. Dieses Gen besitzt ein Pseudogen auf Chromosom 7.
