Dieses Gen gehört zum Protocadherin-gamma-Gencluster, einem von drei verwandten Clustern, die tandemartig auf Chromosom fünf miteinander verbunden sind. Unterfamilie A enthält 12 Gene, Unterfamilie B enthält 7 Gene und 2 Pseudogene, und die entfernter verwandte Unterfamilie C enthält 3 Gene. Die Tandemanordnung von 22 großen, variablen Exons wird von einer konstanten Region gefolgt, die 3 Exons enthält, die von allen Genen im Cluster geteilt werden. Jedes variable Exon kodiert die extrazelluläre Region, die 6 Cadherin-Ektodomänen und eine Transmembranregion umfasst. Die Exons der konstanten Region kodieren die gemeinsame zytoplasmatische Region. Diese neuralen Cadherin-ähnlichen Zelladhäsionsproteine spielen höchstwahrscheinlich eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Etablierung und Funktion spezifischer Zell-Zell-Verbindungen im Gehirn.
