Als Reaktion auf Zytokine und Wachstumsfaktoren werden STAT-Familienmitglieder durch die Rezeptor-assoziierten Kinasen phosphoryliert und bilden dann Homo- oder Heterodimere, die in den Zellkern translozieren, wo sie als Transkriptionsaktivatoren wirken. Dieses Protein spielt eine zentrale Rolle bei der Ausübung IL4-vermittelter biologischer Reaktionen. Es induziert die Expression von BCL2L1/BCL-X(L), das für die anti-apoptotische Aktivität von IL4 verantwortlich ist. Knockout-Studien an Mäusen deuteten auf die Rolle dieses Gens bei der Differenzierung von T-Helfer-2 (Th2)-Zellen, der Expression von Zelloberflächenmarkern und dem Klassenwechsel von Immunglobulinen hin.
