Hintergrund

Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein ist ein negativer Regulator des Zellzyklus und war das erste gefundene Tumorsuppressorgen. Das kodierte Protein stabilisiert auch das konstitutive Heterochromatin, um die gesamte Chromatinstruktur aufrechtzuerhalten. Die aktive, hypophosphorylierte Form des Proteins bindet den Transkriptionsfaktor E2F1. Defekte in diesem Gen sind eine Ursache für das Retinoblastom (RB) bei Kindern, Blasenkrebs und das osteogene Sarkom. [bereitgestellt von RefSeq, Juli 2008].
