Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein ist ein Vesikel-gebundener, natriumabhängiger Phosphattransporter, der spezifisch in den neuron-reichen Regionen des Gehirns exprimiert wird. Es ist bevorzugt mit den Membranen synaptischer Vesikel assoziiert und fungiert im Glutamattransport. Das Protein teilt eine 82%ige Identität mit dem Differenzierungs-assoziierten Na-abhängigen anorganischen Phosphat-Kotransporter und scheint eine eigenständige Klasse innerhalb der Na+/Pi-Kotransporterfamilie zu bilden.
