Dieses Gen kodiert ein Mitglied der Serum-Amyloid-A-Familie der Apolipoproteine. Das kodierte Präproprotein wird proteolytisch verarbeitet, um das reife Protein zu erzeugen. Dieses Protein ist ein wichtiges Akute-Phase-Protein, das als Reaktion auf Entzündungen und Gewebeschäden stark exprimiert wird. Dieses Protein spielt auch eine wichtige Rolle im HDL-Metabolismus und der Cholesterinhomöostase. Hohe Spiegel dieses Proteins sind mit chronischen entzündlichen Erkrankungen wie Atherosklerose, rheumatoider Arthritis, Alzheimer-Krankheit und Morbus Crohn verbunden. Dieses Protein könnte auch ein potenzieller Biomarker für bestimmte Tumore sein. Alternatives Spleißen führt zu mehreren Transkriptvarianten, die dasselbe Protein kodieren.
