Das CD8-Antigen ist ein Zelloberflächenglykoprotein, das auf den meisten zytotoxischen T-Lymphozyten vorkommt und effiziente Zell-Zell-Interaktionen innerhalb des Immunsystems vermittelt. Das CD8-Antigen, das als Korezeptor fungiert, und der T-Zell-Rezeptor auf dem T-Lymphozyten erkennen Antigene, die von einer antigenpräsentierenden Zelle (APC) im Kontext von Klasse-I-MHC-Molekülen präsentiert werden. Der funktionelle Korezeptor ist entweder ein Homodimer, das aus zwei Alphaketten besteht, oder ein Heterodimer, das aus einer Alpha- und einer Betakette besteht. Sowohl Alpha- als auch Betaketten weisen eine signifikante Homologie zu variablen leichten Immunglobulin-Ketten auf. Dieses Gen kodiert die CD8-Betaketten-Isoformen. Es wurden mehrere alternativ gespleißte Transkriptvarianten beschrieben, die verschiedene membrangebundene oder sezernierte Isoformen kodieren.
