Azurophile Granula, spezialisierte Lysosomen der Neutrophilen, enthalten mindestens 10 Proteine, die an der Abtötung von Mikroorganismen beteiligt sind. Dieses Gen kodiert ein Präproprotein, das proteolytisch gespalten wird, um ein reifes azurophiles Granula-Antibiotikum mit Monozyten-chemoattraktiver und antimikrobieller Aktivität zu erzeugen. Es ist auch ein wichtiger multifunktionaler Entzündungsmediator. Dieses kodierte Protein gehört zur Serinprotease-Genfamilie, ist aber keine Serinproteinase, da die Serin- und Histidinreste des aktiven Zentrums ersetzt sind. Die Gene, die dieses Protein, die Neutrophilen-Elastase 2 und die Proteinase 3 kodieren, befinden sich in einem Cluster am Chromosom 19pter.
