Dieses Gen kodiert ein Mitglied der Sedolisin-Familie von Serinproteasen. Die Protease funktioniert im Lysosom, um N-terminale Tripeptide von Substraten abzuspalten, und hat eine schwächere Endopeptidaseaktivität. Sie wird als katalytisch inaktives Enzym synthetisiert, das bei Ansäuerung aktiviert und autoproteolysiert wird. Mutationen in diesem Gen führen zu einer spätinfantilen neuronalen Ceroidlipofuszinose, die mit dem Versagen des Abbaus spezifischer Neuropeptide und einer Untereinheit der ATP-Synthase im Lysosom verbunden ist.
