Dieses Gen kodiert ein hoch abundantes Knochenprotein, das von Osteoblasten sezerniert wird und den Knochenumbau und den Energiestoffwechsel reguliert. Das kodierte Protein enthält eine Gla (Gamma-Carboxyglutamat)-Domäne, die an die Bindung von Kalzium und Hydroxyapatit, dem Mineralbestandteil des Knochens, beteiligt ist. Serum-Osteocalcin-Spiegel können negativ mit dem metabolischen Syndrom korreliert sein. Eine Read-through-Transkription existiert zwischen diesem Gen und dem benachbarten stromaufwärts gelegenen Gen PMF1 (Polyamin-modulierter Faktor 1), aber das kodierte Protein zeigt nur Sequenzidentität mit dem Produkt des stromaufwärts gelegenen Gens.
