Das Adenovirus E1A-Protein aktiviert und unterdrückt die Genexpression, um die Zellproliferation zu fördern und die Differenzierung zu hemmen. Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein antagonisiert die transkriptionelle Aktivierung und zelluläre Transformation durch E1A. Dieses Protein weist eine begrenzte Sequenzähnlichkeit mit E1A auf und bindet in vitro sowohl den allgemeinen Transkriptionsfaktor TBP als auch den Tumorsuppressor pRb.
