Dieses Gen kodiert ein Präproprotein, das proteolytisch verarbeitet wird, um mehrere Proteinprodukte zu bilden. Das primär kodierte Proteinprodukt, Lactadherin, ist ein Membran-Glykoprotein, das die Phagozytose von apoptotischen Zellen fördert. Dieses Protein wurde auch bei der Wundheilung, Autoimmunerkrankungen und Krebs in Verbindung gebracht. Lactadherin kann weiterverarbeitet werden, um ein kleineres Spaltprodukt, Medin, zu bilden, das den Hauptproteinbestandteil des Aortenmedial-Amyloids (AMA) ausmacht.
