Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein gehört zur Interleukin-1-Zytokinfamilie. Die Aktivität dieses Zytokins wird durch Interleukin-1-Rezeptor-ähnliche 2 (IL1RL2/IL1R-rp2) vermittelt und spezifisch durch Interleukin-1-Familienmitglied 5 (IL1F5/IL-1 delta) gehemmt. Interferon-gamma, Tumornekrosefaktor-alpha und Interleukin-1 beta (IL1B) sollen die Expression dieses Zytokins in Keratinozyten stimulieren. Die Expression dieses Zytokins in Keratinozyten kann auch durch eine Kontakthypersensitivitätsreaktion oder Herpes-simplex-Virusinfektion induziert werden. Dieses Gen und acht weitere Interleukin-1-Familiengene bilden einen Zytokin-Gencluster auf Chromosom 2.
