Dieses Gen kodiert den Vitamin-K-abhängigen Gerinnungsfaktor X der Blutgerinnungskaskade. Dieser Faktor durchläuft mehrere Verarbeitungsschritte, bevor sein Präproprotein durch die Exzision des Tripeptids RKR in eine reife zweikettige Form umgewandelt wird. Zwei Ketten des Faktors werden durch eine oder mehrere Disulfidbrücken zusammengehalten; die leichte Kette enthält 2 EGF-ähnliche Domänen, während die schwere Kette die katalytische Domäne enthält, die strukturell homolog zu denen der anderen hämostatischen Serinproteasen ist. Der reife Faktor wird durch die Spaltung des Aktivierungspeptids durch Faktor IXa (im intrinsischen Weg) oder durch Faktor VIIa (im extrinsischen Weg) aktiviert. Der aktivierte Faktor wandelt dann Prothrombin in Thrombin um, in Anwesenheit von Faktor Va, Ca+2 und Phospholipid während der Blutgerinnung.
