Proteine der Matrix-Metalloproteinase (MMP)-Familie sind am Abbau der extrazellulären Matrix bei normalen physiologischen Prozessen wie der Embryonalentwicklung, Fortpflanzung und Gewebeumbildung sowie bei Krankheitsprozessen wie Arthritis und Metastasierung beteiligt. Die meisten MMPs werden als inaktive Proproteine sezerniert, die durch extrazelluläre Proteinase-Spaltung aktiviert werden. Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein ist jedoch ein Mitglied der Membran-Typ-MMP (MT-MMP)-Unterfamilie; jedes Mitglied dieser Unterfamilie enthält eine potenzielle Transmembrandomäne, was darauf hindeutet, dass diese Proteine an der Zelloberfläche exprimiert und nicht sezerniert werden.
