Dieses Gen kodiert für ein sezerniertes Mitglied der Phospholipase A2 (PLA2)-Enzymklasse, das von den pankreatischen Azinuszellen produziert wird. Das kodierte kalziumabhängige Enzym katalysiert die Hydrolyse der sn-2-Position von Membran-Glycerophospholipiden, um Arachidonsäure (AA) und Lysophospholipide freizusetzen. AA wird anschließend durch nachgeschaltete Stoffwechselenzyme in mehrere bioaktive lipophile Verbindungen (Eicosanoide) umgewandelt, einschließlich Prostaglandinen (PGs) und Leukotrienen (LTs).
