S100A7 ist ein 11-12 kDa schweres Mitglied der S100-Familie der EF-Hand-Kalzium-bindenden Proteine. Menschliches S100A7 teilt 32 % Aminosäuresequenzidentität mit Maus-S100A7A, dem am nächsten verwandten Protein bei Mäusen. Es ist am N-Terminus acetyliert und bindet sowohl Kalzium- als auch Zinkionen. S100A7 ist in Keratinozyten von Psoriasis- und atopischer Dermatitis-Läsionen sowie in Epithelzellen der Zunge, des Auges und des weiblichen Genitaltrakts hochreguliert. Seine Hochregulierung kann durch Bakterienexposition, entzündliche Zytokine oder Störung der Epidermisbarriere induziert werden. S100A7 unterstützt die epitheliale Integrität, indem es E. coli durch Zinksequestrierung abtötet und die Hochregulierung von Tight-Junction-Proteinen induziert. Die Interaktion von S100A7 mit RAGE fördert die Migration von Immunzellen und die Infiltration von Makrophagen in Tumorherde.
