Der Granulozyten-Makrophagen-Kolonie-stimulierende Faktor (GM-CSF) wurde ursprünglich als Wachstumsfaktor charakterisiert, der die In-vitro-Koloniebildung von Granulozyten-Makrophagen-Vorläufern unterstützen kann. Er wird von einer Reihe verschiedener Zelltypen (einschließlich aktivierter T-Zellen, B-Zellen, Makrophagen, Mastzellen, Endothelzellen und Fibroblasten) als Reaktion auf Zytokine von Immun- und Entzündungsreizen produziert. Neben Granulozyten-Makrophagen-Vorläufern ist GM-CSF auch ein Wachstumsfaktor für erythroidale, megakaryozytäre und eosinophile Vorläufer sowie für reife hämatopoetische Zellen, Monozyten/Makrophagen und Eosinophile. GM-CSF spielt eine funktionelle Rolle bei nicht-hämatopoetischen Zellen. Es kann menschliche Endothelzellen zur Migration und Proliferation anregen. Zusätzlich kann GM-CSF auch die Proliferation einer Reihe von Tumorzelllinien stimulieren, einschließlich osteogener Sarkom-, Karzinom- und Adenokarzinomzelllinien.
