CDX2 ist ein homöobox-Gen vom kaudalen Typ, das einen darmspezifischen Transkriptionsfaktor kodiert, der früh in der Darmentwicklung exprimiert wird und an der Regulierung der Proliferation und Differenzierung intestinaler Epithelzellen beteiligt sein kann. Es wird in den Zellkernen von Epithelzellen im gesamten Darm, vom Zwölffingerdarm bis zum Rektum, exprimiert. Das CDX2-Protein wird in primären und metastatischen kolorektalen Karzinomen exprimiert und wurde auch in der intestinalen Metaplasie des Magens und Magenkrebs vom intestinalen Typ nachgewiesen, während es in der normalen Magenschleimhaut nicht exprimiert wird. Studien haben gezeigt, dass CDX2 ein überlegener Marker im Vergleich zu CK20 ist.
