Dieses Protein gehört zur Keratinfamilie. Die Zytokeratine vom Typ I bestehen aus sauren Proteinen, die in Paaren heterotypischer Keratinketten angeordnet sind. Im Gegensatz zu seinen verwandten Familienmitgliedern ist dieses kleinste bekannte saure Zytokeratin in Epithelzellen nicht mit einem basischen Zytokeratin gepaart. Es wird spezifisch im Periderm exprimiert, der vorübergehend oberflächlichen Schicht, die die sich entwickelnde Epidermis umhüllt. Keratin 19 wird nicht in Hepatozyten exprimiert, daher ist ein Antikörper gegen Keratin 19 nützlich bei der Identifizierung von Lebermetastasen. Der Grad der Keratin-19-Positivität bei Brustkrebs unterscheidet maligne von benignen Tumoren. Keratin 19 wird oft zusammen mit Keratin 7 exprimiert.
