Das CD68-Antigen ist ein transmembranes Protein von 37 kD, das posttranslational glykosyliert wird, um ein Protein von 87-115 kD zu ergeben. CD68 wird spezifisch von Gewebemakrophagen, Langerhans-Zellen und in geringem Maße von dendritischen Zellen exprimiert. Es könnte eine Rolle bei den phagozytischen Aktivitäten von Gewebemakrophagen spielen, sowohl im intrazellulären lysosomalen Stoffwechsel als auch bei extrazellulären Zell-Zell- und Zell-Pathogen-Interaktionen. Es bindet an gewebe- und organspezifische Lektine oder Selektine, wodurch die Homöostase von Makrophagen-Subtypen an bestimmten Stellen ermöglicht wird. Eine schnelle Rezirkulation von CD68 von Endosomen und Lysosomen zur Plasmamembran könnte es Makrophagen ermöglichen, über Selektin-tragende Substrate oder andere Zellen zu kriechen.
