Calnexin ist ein Chaperon, das durch die Unterstützung der Proteinfaltung und Qualitätskontrolle gekennzeichnet ist, um sicherzustellen, dass nur ordnungsgemäß gefaltete und assemblierte Proteine den Sekretionsweg weiter durchlaufen. Calnexin ist ein integrales Protein (das je nach Antikörperquelle als 90 kDa, 80 kDa oder 75 kDa Bande beim Western Blotting erscheint) des endoplasmatischen Retikulums (ER). Es besteht aus einer großen (50 kDa) N-terminalen kalziumbindenden luminalen Domäne, einer einzelnen Transmembranhelix und einem kurzen (90 Reste langen), sauren zytoplasmatischen Schwanz.
