Die AMP-aktivierte Proteinkinase (AMPK) ist von Hefe über Pflanzen bis hin zu Tieren hochkonserviert und spielt eine Schlüsselrolle bei der Regulierung der Energiehomöostase. AMPK ist ein heterotrimerer Komplex, der aus einer katalytischen α-Untereinheit und regulierenden β- und γ-Untereinheiten besteht, von denen jede durch zwei oder drei unterschiedliche Gene (α1, 2; β1, 2; γ1, 2, 3) kodiert wird.
