STAT6 ist ein menschliches Gen. Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein ist ein Mitglied der STAT-Familie von Transkriptionsfaktoren. Das Gen erstreckt sich über 19 kb und enthält 23 Exons. Als Reaktion auf Zytokine und Wachstumsfaktoren werden Mitglieder der STAT-Familie durch die rezeptorassoziierten Kinasen phosphoryliert und bilden dann Homo- oder Heterodimere, die in den Zellkern translozieren, wo sie als Transkriptionsaktivatoren wirken. Dieses Protein spielt eine zentrale Rolle bei der Ausübung IL4-vermittelter biologischer Reaktionen. Es wurde festgestellt, dass es die Expression von BCL2L1/BCL-X (L) induziert, das für die antiapoptotische Aktivität von IL4 verantwortlich ist. Knockout-Studien an Mäusen deuteten auf die Rolle dieses Gens bei der Differenzierung von T-Helfer 2 (Th2), der Expression von Zelloberflächenmarkern und dem Klassenwechsel von Immunglobulinen hin.
