Signaltransduktor und Aktivator der Transkription 1 (STAT1) ist ein Transkriptionsfaktor, der beim Menschen vom STAT1-Gen kodiert wird. Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein gehört zur STAT-Proteinfamilie. Als Reaktion auf Zytokine und Wachstumsfaktoren werden STAT-Familienmitglieder von den rezeptorassoziierten Kinasen phosphoryliert und bilden dann Homo- oder Heterodimere, die in den Zellkern translozieren, wo sie als Transkriptionsaktivatoren wirken. Dieses Protein kann durch verschiedene Liganden wie Interferon-alpha, Interferon-gamma, EGF, PDGF und IL6 aktiviert werden. Dieses Protein vermittelt die Expression einer Vielzahl von Genen, von denen angenommen wird, dass sie für die Zellviabilität als Reaktion auf verschiedene Zellstimuli und Pathogene wichtig sind. Es wurden zwei alternativ gespleißte Transkriptvarianten beschrieben, die unterschiedliche Isoformen kodieren.
