SIRT2 ist ein überwiegend zytoplasmatisches Protein, das mit Mikrotubuli kolokalisiert. Dieses Gen kodiert ein Mitglied der Sirtuin-Proteinfamilie, Homologe des Hefe-Sir2-Proteins. Mitglieder der Sirtuin-Familie zeichnen sich durch eine Sirtuin-Kerndomäne aus und werden in vier Klassen eingeteilt. SIRT2 ist auf 19q13.2 kartiert. Es ist in der Lage, Radioaktivität von (32P) NAD auf Rinderserumalbumin (BSA) zu übertragen. Laut Forschungsergebnissen kann SIRT2 als bona fide Tubulin-Deacetylase fungieren. Es wurde festgestellt, dass SIRT2 Lys40 von Alpha-Tubulin sowohl in vitro als auch in vivo deacetyliert.
