Die Cytochrom-c-Oxidase (COX) katalysiert die Übertragung von Elektronen von Cytochrom c auf molekularen Sauerstoff, was dazu beiträgt, den Protonengradienten über die innere Mitochondrienmembran aufrechtzuerhalten, der für die aerobe ATP-Produktion notwendig ist. Menschliche COX ist ein multimerer Proteinkomplex, der mehrere Assemblierungsfaktoren benötigt; dieses Gen kodiert einen der COX-Assemblierungsfaktoren. Das kodierte Protein ist ein Metallochaperon, das an der Biogenese der Cytochrom-c-Oxidase-Untereinheit II beteiligt ist. Mutationen in diesem Gen sind mit fataler infantiler Enzephalokardiomyopathie und Myopie 6 assoziiert.
