S100 Kalzium-bindendes Protein B oder S100B ist ein Protein der S-100-Proteinfamilie. S100-Gene umfassen mindestens 13 Mitglieder, die als Cluster auf Chromosom 1q21 lokalisiert sind; dieses Gen befindet sich jedoch auf 21q22.3. S100B ist ein glial abgeleitetes Protein, das ein gut etablierter Biomarker für die Schwere neurologischer Verletzungen und die Prognose für die Genesung ist. S100 beta ist ein Kalzium-bindendes Protein, das im Gehirn hauptsächlich von Astrozyten in hohen Mengen exprimiert wird. Die Zugabe der Disulfid-gebundenen dimeren Form von S100 beta zu primären neuronalen und glialen Kulturen und etablierten Zelllinien induziert axonales Wachstum und Veränderungen der Astrozytenproliferation und des Phänotyps, aber es wurden keine Beweise dafür vorgelegt, dass S100 beta in vivo die gleichen Effekte ausübt. Reeves et al. (1994) zeigten, dass die gleichen Effekte des S100B-Proteins in vivo ausgeübt werden. Sie fanden heraus, dass sowohl Astrozytose als auch Neuritenproliferation in transgenen Mäusen auftraten, die erhöhte S100b-Spiegel exprimierten.
