Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein gehört zur HIN-200-Familie der Interferon-induzierbaren Proteine, die ein 200-Aminosäuren-Signaturmotiv an ihren C-Termini aufweisen. HIN200-Proteine sind primär nukleär und an der transkriptionellen Regulation von Genen beteiligt, die für die Zellzykluskontrolle, Differenzierung und Apoptose wichtig sind. Die Herunterregulierung dieses Gens ist mit Brustkrebs assoziiert. Dieses Protein fungiert als Tumorsuppressor, indem es die Ubiquitinierung und den anschließenden Abbau von MDM2 fördert, was zur Stabilisierung von p53/TP53 führt. Alternativ gespleißte Transkriptvarianten, die verschiedene Isoformen kodieren, wurden für dieses Gen beschrieben.
