Cadherine, wie CDH3, sind integrale Membranglykoproteine, die für die kalziumabhängige Zell-Zell-Adhäsion verantwortlich sind. Cadherin-3 ist ein Protein, das beim Menschen durch das CDH3-Gen kodiert wird. Dieses Gen ist ein klassisches Cadherin aus der Cadherin-Superfamilie. Das kodierte Protein ist ein kalziumabhängiges Zell-Zell-Adhäsionsglykoprotein, das aus fünf extrazellulären Cadherin-Repeats, einer Transmembranregion und einem hochkonservierten zytoplasmatischen Schwanz besteht. Dieses Gen befindet sich in einem Sechs-Cadherin-Cluster in einer Region auf dem langen Arm von Chromosom 16, die an Loss-of-Heterozygosity-Ereignissen bei Brust- und Prostatakrebs beteiligt ist. Darüber hinaus wird eine abweichende Expression dieses Proteins bei zervikalen Adenokarzinomen beobachtet. Mutationen in diesem Gen wurden mit angeborener Hypotrichose mit juveniler Makuladystrophie in Verbindung gebracht.
