Growth Associated Protein-43 (GAP-43), auch bekannt als nervenwachstumsbezogenes Wachstumshormon GAP43, weist eine hohe Homologie zwischen der Sequenz des menschlichen Gens und des Rattengens auf. GAP-43 gilt als entscheidender Bestandteil einer effektiven regenerativen Reaktion im Nervensystem. Somatische Zellhybride zeigen die Lokalisation des GAP-43-Gens auf dem menschlichen Chromosom 3 und auf dem Maus-Chromosom 16. GAP-43 wurde als Wachstums- oder Plastizitätsprotein bezeichnet, da es während der Entwicklung und während der axonalen Regeneration in neuronalen Wachstumskegeln in hohen Mengen exprimiert wird. GAP-43 reguliert das Wachstum von Axonen und moduliert die Bildung neuer Verbindungen.
