Neurocan-Core-Protein ist ein Protein, das beim Menschen durch das NCAN-Gen kodiert wird. Neurocan gehört zu den Proteinfamilien der Lecticane/Chondroitinsulfat-Proteoglykane und besteht aus Neurocan-Core-Protein und Chondroitinsulfat. Es wird angenommen, dass es an der Modulation der Zelladhäsion und -migration beteiligt ist. Bei menschlichen Probanden wurde festgestellt, dass der NCAN-Genotyp stark mit manischen Symptomen, aber nicht mit depressiven Symptomen assoziiert war. Bei Mäusen führte das Fehlen von funktionalem Neurocan zu einer Vielzahl manieähnlicher Verhaltensweisen, die durch die Verabreichung von Lithium normalisiert werden konnten.
