Das Neurofilament Light Polypeptid (NFL), auch bekannt als Neurofilament Light Chain, ist ein Neurofilamentprotein, das beim Menschen vom NEFL-Gen kodiert wird. Neurofilamente sind Typ-IV-Intermediärfilament-Heteropolymere, die aus leichten, mittleren und schweren Ketten bestehen. Neurofilamente bilden das Axoskelett und erhalten funktionell das neuronale Kaliber. Sie könnten auch eine Rolle beim intrazellulären Transport zu Axonen und Dendriten spielen. Dieses Gen kodiert das Neurofilamentprotein der leichten Kette. Mutationen in diesem Gen verursachen Charcot-Marie-Tooth-Krankheit Typ 1F (CMT1F) und 2E (CMT2E), Erkrankungen des peripheren Nervensystems, die durch unterschiedliche Neuropathien gekennzeichnet sind. Ein Pseudogen wurde auf Chromosom Y identifiziert.
