Mucin 2, auch bekannt als MUC2, ist ein Protein, das beim Menschen durch das MUC2-Gen kodiert wird. Dieses Gen kodiert ein Mitglied der Mucin-Proteinfamilie. Es ist auf 11p15.5 kartiert. Mucin 2 ist besonders prominent im Darm, wo es von Becherzellen in der Epithelschicht in das Lumen des Dickdarms abgesondert wird. Dort polymerisiert Mucin 2 zusammen mit geringen Mengen verwandter Mucinproteine zu einem Gel, dessen Gewicht zu 80 % aus Oligosaccharid-Seitenketten besteht, die als posttranslationale Modifikationen zu den Mucinproteinen hinzugefügt werden. Dieses Gel bildet eine unlösliche Schleimbarriere, die dazu dient, das Darmepithel zu schützen. Die primäre Funktion des MUC2-Genprodukts besteht darin, eine Schutzbarriere zwischen den Epithelflächen und dem Darmlumen zu bilden. Bei Darmkrebs ist die Expression von MUC2 verringert und bei Colitis ulcerosa ist die Polymerisation des sezernierten Schleims defekt.
