Mucin 1, zelloberflächenassoziiert (MUC1) oder polymorphes Epithelmucin (PEM) ist ein Mucin, das beim Menschen durch das MUC1-Gen kodiert wird. Dieses Gen kodiert ein membrangebundenes Protein, das zur Familie der Mucine gehört. Mucine sind O-glykosylierte Proteine, die eine wesentliche Rolle bei der Bildung schützender Schleimbarrieren auf Epithelflächen spielen. Es ist auf 1q22 kartiert. Mucin 1 ist ein Transmembran-Mucin, das normalerweise an den apikalen Grenzen sekretorischer Epithelzellen exprimiert wird. Eine Überexpression von Mucin 1 wird häufig mit Darm-, Brust-, Eierstock-, Lungen- und Bauchspeicheldrüsenkrebs in Verbindung gebracht. Das Protein hat eine Schutzfunktion, indem es an Pathogene bindet, und fungiert auch als Signalgeber in der Zelle. Mucin 1 stimulierte die ESR1-vermittelte Transkription und trug zum Östradiol-vermittelten Wachstum und Überleben von Brustkrebszellen bei. Dieses Gen kann auch die pulmonale angeborene Immunität unterdrücken, und seine entzündungshemmende Aktivität könnte eine wichtige modulierende Rolle während mikrobieller Infektionen spielen.
