Kollagenase 3 ist ein Enzym, das beim Menschen durch das MMP13-Gen kodiert wird. Dieses Gen kodiert ein Mitglied der Peptidase-M10-Familie der Matrix-Metalloproteinasen (MMPs). Proteine dieser Familie sind am Abbau der extrazellulären Matrix bei normalen physiologischen Prozessen wie der embryonalen Entwicklung, Reproduktion und Gewebeumgestaltung sowie bei Krankheitsprozessen wie Arthritis und Metastasierung beteiligt. Das kodierte Präproprotein wird proteolytisch gespalten, um die reife Protease zu erzeugen. Diese Protease spaltet Typ-II-Kollagen effizienter als Typ I und III. Es könnte am Gelenkknorpelumsatz und an der Knorpelpathophysiologie im Zusammenhang mit Osteoarthritis beteiligt sein. Mutationen in diesem Gen sind mit metaphysärer Anadysplasie assoziiert. Dieses Gen ist Teil eines Clusters von MMP-Genen auf Chromosom 11.
