Das durch dieses Gen kodierte Protein ist ein Mitglied der Serin/Threonin-Proteinkinase-Familie. Diese Kinase hat sich gezeigt, dass sie MAPK8/JNK spezifisch aktiviert. Die Aktivierung von MAPK8 durch diese Kinase wird durch die dominant-negativen Mutanten von MAP3K7/TAK1, MAP2K4/MKK4 und MAP2K7/MKK7 gehemmt, was darauf hindeutet, dass diese Kinase über die MAP3K7-MAP2K4-MAP2K7-Kinasekaskade funktionieren und den TNF-alpha-Signalweg vermitteln könnte. Alternativ gespleißte Transkriptvarianten, die verschiedene Isoformen kodieren, wurden identifiziert.
