Dieses Gen kodiert ein Protein, das zur GTP-bindenden Superfamilie und zur immunoassoziierten Nukleotid (IAN)-Unterfamilie der Nukleotid-bindenden Proteine gehört. Beim Menschen befinden sich die Gene der IAN-Unterfamilie in einem Cluster bei 7q36.1. Dieses Gen soll an der Differenzierung von T-Helferzellen (Th-Zellen) der Th1-Linie beteiligt sein, und das verwandte Mausgen hat sich als entscheidend für die Entwicklung reifer B- und T-Lymphozyten erwiesen. Zwischen diesem Gen und dem nachgeschalteten GIMAP5 (GTPase, IMAP family member 5)-Gen besteht eine Read-through-Transkription.
