K7 enthält 4 zentrale Alpha-Helix-Segmente mit Heptad-Wiederholungen hydrophober Reste, die charakteristisch für eine Coiled-Coil-Region sind. Innerhalb dieser Domäne weist K7 eine Homologie von 73% mit epidermalen K6B auf. Das KRT7-Gen enthält 9 Exons und erstreckt sich über mehr als 15,6 kb. Das K7-Gen ist auf Chromosom 12 kartiert. Keratin 7 wird in einer Vielzahl von epithelialen Strukturen beim Menschen exprimiert.
