Cholin-Acetyltransferase (üblicherweise abgekürzt als ChAT, manchmal aber auch als CAT) ist ein Transferase-Enzym, das für die Synthese des Neurotransmitters Acetylcholin verantwortlich ist. Beim Menschen wird das Cholin-Acetyltransferase-Enzym durch das CHAT-Gen kodiert. Dieses Genprodukt ist ein charakteristisches Merkmal cholinerger Neuronen, und Veränderungen in diesen Neuronen könnten einige der Symptome der Alzheimer-Krankheit erklären. Polymorphismen in diesem Gen wurden mit der Alzheimer-Krankheit und leichter kognitiver Beeinträchtigung in Verbindung gebracht. Mutationen in diesem Gen sind mit dem kongenitalen myasthenischen Syndrom assoziiert, das mit episodischer Apnoe einhergeht. Für dieses Gen wurden mehrere Transkriptvarianten gefunden, die verschiedene Isoformen kodieren, und einige dieser Varianten haben sich als kodierend für mehr als eine Isoform erwiesen.
