CDK2, Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 2, ist auch bekannt als P33. Das CDK2-Protein war hochhomolog zur p34(CDC2)-Kinase und noch signifikanter homolog zur Xenopus Eg1-Kinase, was darauf hindeutet, dass CDK2 das menschliche Homolog von Eg1 ist. Das CDK2-Gen ist auf 12q13 kartiert, derselben Region, auf die auch das CDK4-Gen kartiert ist. Menschliches Cyclin A bindet unabhängig an zwei Kinasen, p34(cdc2) oder p33. In Adenovirus-transformierten Zellen scheint das virale E1A-Onkoprotein mit p33/Cyclin A zu assoziieren, aber nicht mit p34(cdc2)/Cyclin A. Das Gen für p33 weist eine 65%ige Sequenzidentität mit p34(cdc2) auf. P33(cdk2) spielt eine einzigartige Rolle bei der Zellzyklusregulation von Wirbeltierzellen.
