Dieses Gen kodiert ein Zelloberflächen-Glykoprotein, das die Komplement-vermittelte Zelllyse reguliert, und ist an der Lymphozyten-Signaltransduktion beteiligt. Dieses Protein ist ein potenter Inhibitor des Komplement-Membranangriffskomplexes, indem es während der Assemblierung dieses Komplexes Komplement C8 und/oder C9 bindet und so die Inkorporation mehrerer Kopien von C9 in den Komplex hemmt, was für die osmolytische Porenformation notwendig ist. Es spielt auch eine Rolle in Signaltransduktionswegen bei der Aktivierung von T-Zellen. Mutationen in diesem Gen verursachen einen CD59-Mangel, eine Krankheit, die zu hämolytischer Anämie und Thrombose führt und Hirninfarkte verursacht. Für dieses Gen wurden mehrere alternativ gespleißte Transkriptvarianten identifiziert, die dasselbe Protein kodieren.
