Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein ist ein nicht-linienbeschränktes Typ-II-Transmembranglykoprotein, das cyclisches Adenosin-5'-Diphosphat-Ribose, einen intrazellulären Kalziumionen-mobilisierenden Botenstoff, synthetisiert und hydrolysiert. Die Freisetzung von löslichem Protein und die Fähigkeit von membrangebundenem Protein, internalisiert zu werden, deuten auf extrazelluläre und intrazelluläre Funktionen des Proteins hin. Dieses Protein besitzt einen N-terminalen zytoplasmatischen Schwanz, eine einzelne transmembranäre Domäne und eine C-terminale extrazelluläre Region mit vier N-Glykosylierungsstellen. Die Kristallstrukturanalyse zeigt, dass das funktionelle Molekül ein Dimer ist, wobei der zentrale Teil die katalytische Stelle enthält. Es wird als prognostischer Marker für Patienten mit chronischer lymphatischer Leukämie verwendet. Alternatives Spleißen führt zu mehreren Transkriptvarianten.
