Dieses antimikrobielle Gen ist eines von mehreren CC-Zytokin-Genen, die auf dem p-Arm von Chromosom 9 geclustert sind. Zytokine sind eine Familie sezernierter Proteine, die an immunregulatorischen und entzündlichen Prozessen beteiligt sind. Die CC-Zytokine sind Proteine, die durch zwei benachbarte Cysteine gekennzeichnet sind. Ähnlich wie andere Chemokine hemmt das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein die Hämatopoese und stimuliert die Chemotaxis. Dieses Protein ist in vitro chemotaktisch für Thymozyten und aktivierte T-Zellen, aber nicht für B-Zellen, Makrophagen oder Neutrophile. Das von diesem Gen kodierte Zytokin kann auch eine Rolle bei der Vermittlung des Homing von Lymphozyten zu sekundären lymphatischen Organen spielen. Es ist ein hochaffiner funktioneller Ligand für den Chemokinrezeptor 7, der auf T- und B-Lymphozyten exprimiert wird, und ein bekannter Rezeptor für ein anderes Mitglied der Zytokinfamilie (kleines induzierbares Zytokin A19).
