Dieses Gen kodiert ein Mitglied der Argonaute-Proteinfamilie, die mit kleinen RNAs assoziiert ist und wichtige Rollen bei der RNA-Interferenz (RNAi) und RNA-Silencing spielt. Dieses Protein bindet an microRNAs (miRNAs) oder small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) und unterdrückt die Translation von mRNAs, die zu diesen komplementär sind. Es ist auch an der Transkriptionsgen-Silencing (TGS) von Promotorregionen beteiligt, die zu gebundenen kurzen Antigen-RNAs (agRNAs) komplementär sind, sowie am Abbau von miRNA-gebundenen mRNA-Zielen. Alternativ gespleißte Transkriptvarianten, die verschiedene Isoformen kodieren, wurden für dieses Gen gefunden. Eine aktuelle Studie zeigte, dass dieses Gen ein authentisches Stop-Codon-Readthrough-Ziel ist und dass seine mRNA durch die Verwendung eines alternativen In-Frame-Translations-Terminationscodons eine zusätzliche C-terminal verlängerte Isoform hervorbringen könnte.

AGO1 (argonaute RISC component 1; protein argonaute-1) is an Argonaute-family RNA-binding protein that uses small regulatory RNAs to guide gene silencing. It is studied as a core component of miRNA- and siRNA-associated post-transcriptional regulation.
Biological function: Protein argonaute-1 binds microRNAs (miRNAs) and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and uses their sequence information to recognize complementary RNA targets. AGO1 supports RNA interference and RNA silencing, including translational repression and degradation of miRNA-bound mRNA targets; NCBI also describes a role in transcriptional gene silencing of complementary promoter regions.
