ALOX5 (arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase), widely known as 5-lipoxygenase, 5-LO or 5-LOX, is a lipid-oxidising enzyme that initiates leukotriene biosynthesis from arachidonic acid. Researchers study ALOX5 in eicosanoid signalling, leukocyte biology and inflammatory mediator production.
Biological function: ALOX5 catalyses conversion of arachidonic acid to 5-hydroperoxyeicosatetraenoic acid (5-HPETE) and then leukotriene A4 (LTA4), a branch-point intermediate for downstream leukotrienes. This places 5-LOX at a central enzymatic step in leukotriene generation.
