Product description

Background

ATP2A2 encodes one of the SERCA Ca(2+)-ATPases, which are intracellular pumps located in the sarcoplasmic or endoplasmic reticula of muscle cells. This enzyme catalyzes the hydrolysis of ATP coupled with the translocation of calcium from the cytosol into the sarcoplasmic reticulum lumen, and is involved in regulation of the contraction/relaxation cycle. Mutations in this gene cause Darier-White disease, also known as keratosis follicularis, an autosomal dominant skin disorder characterized by loss of adhesion between epidermal cells and abnormal keratinization. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.

Research target context

ATP2A2ATPase sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ transporting 2

View target guide

ATP2A2 encodes SERCA2, a sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic-reticulum calcium pump that uses ATP hydrolysis to move cytosolic calcium into intracellular stores. This target record connects the human ATP2A2/SERCA2 reference identifiers with ABMIUM catalogue products targeting SERCA2.

Biological function: ATP2A2/SERCA2 is a magnesium-dependent calcium-transporting ATPase. It couples ATP hydrolysis to movement of Ca2+ from the cytosol into the sarcoplasmic or endoplasmic reticulum lumen, helping maintain intracellular calcium stores and calcium homeostasis. The reviewed UniProt record also supports roles in starvation-induced autophagy and regulation of endoplasmic-reticulum contact sites.
